1. Emergency operations center
Government & Politics · Emergency Services Abbreviations
Facility where officials from government agencies and partner organizations gather to coordinate the response to a major emergency or disaster, collecting information, allocating resources and supporting responders in the field.
Example: The county activated its EOC at Level 1 as the hurricane approached the coast.
EOCs support incident command posts rather than directing tactics at the scene. Activation levels range from monitoring to full activation with all agencies present. Many EOCs have backup power, communications and sleeping quarters.
2. Evidence of coverage
Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations
Detailed legal document describing what a health plan covers, what members pay, the rules for using the network and how to appeal, used particularly for Medicare Advantage and Part D plans. It serves as the contract between the plan and the member.
Example: Your EOC lists dental cleanings twice a year with no copay.
Medicare plans send an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) each fall and publish the next year's EOC so members can review changes before enrolling again. Some commercial plans call the equivalent document a certificate of coverage.
3. End-of-course exam
Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations
State test taken at the end of a specific high school course, such as Algebra I, Biology or US History, rather than at the end of a grade. Several states require passing certain EOCs to graduate or count them toward course grades.
Example: Students must pass the Algebra I EOC to meet the state graduation requirement.
Texas (STAAR EOC), Florida, North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia are among the states using EOC exams. States differ on whether scores count as a percentage of the final course grade. Students who fail usually have retest opportunities.
