ESF stands for Emergency support function, an emergency services abbreviation.
One of 15 functional groupings under the US National Response Framework that organize federal and state assistance during disasters, such as ESF 1 transportation, ESF 6 mass care and ESF 8 public health and medical services.
Example: ESF 8 coordinated hospital evacuations and medical teams after the hurricane.
Usage notes
Each ESF has coordinating and primary agencies, for example the Department of Health and Human Services for ESF 8. Many states organize their own emergency operations centers around the same numbered functions. The structure dates from the 1992 Federal Response Plan.
