Stands forState of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness
CategoriesEducation & Academia

STAAR stands for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, a standardized test abbreviation.

Texas's state testing program since 2012, covering reading and math in grades 3 to 8, science and social studies in selected grades, and end-of-course exams in high school subjects such as Algebra I and English I. Results drive Texas's A–F school ratings, and passing the required end-of-course exams is a graduation requirement.

Example: Our campus rating rose to a B after STAAR math scores improved in every grade.

Usage notes

House Bill 8, signed in 2025, replaces STAAR with three shorter tests given at the beginning, middle and end of the school year starting in 2027-28. STAAR moved fully online in 2023, and the computer scoring of written answers drew criticism. The Texas Education Agency runs the program.
