ERISA stands for Employee Retirement Income Security Act, a US law abbreviation also used in medicine.

Law of 1974 setting minimum standards for most private-sector retirement and health plans, including fiduciary duties for those who manage plan money, vesting and disclosure rules, and claims procedures. It is enforced by the Labor Department, the IRS and the PBGC.

Example: Because the plan is governed by ERISA, the denial must be appealed internally before suing.

Usage notes

President Gerald Ford signed it on Labor Day, September 2, 1974, after high-profile pension failures such as the 1963 Studebaker plant closing. ERISA preempts many state laws affecting employer plans, which limits state regulation of self-funded health plans. Government and church plans are generally exempt.
