CTI stands for Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive), a US Navy and coast guard rating abbreviation.

Navy linguists who translate, transcribe and analyze foreign-language communications for signals intelligence, often after learning a language such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Persian or Russian at the Defense Language Institute.

Example: CTI2 Hassan provided real-time translation from the ship's signals intelligence space.

Usage notes

The cryptologic technician family also includes collection (CTR), technical (CTT) and maintenance (CTM) ratings. CTIs must pass the Defense Language Aptitude Battery and hold top secret clearances, and many later work for the National Security Agency or other intelligence agencies.
