DPN stands for Diabetic peripheral neuropathy, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Nerve damage from diabetes that typically starts in the toes and feet and spreads upward in a "stocking-glove" pattern, causing numbness, tingling or burning pain. Loss of protective sensation is the main risk factor for foot ulcers and amputations.
Example: DPN: absent monofilament sensation both feet; podiatry referral and annual foot exam.
Usage notes
Screening uses a 10 g monofilament, vibration testing with a 128 Hz tuning fork and ankle reflexes. Painful neuropathy is treated with drugs such as pregabalin, duloxetine and some tricyclics. Tight glucose control slows progression, especially in type 1 diabetes. Also written DPNP for the painful form.
