1. Generalized anxiety disorder

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

Excessive, hard-to-control worry about many everyday matters, present more days than not for at least six months, with symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, poor concentration, irritability, muscle tension and sleep problems. It is treated with CBT, SSRIs or SNRIs, and sometimes buspirone.

Example: GAD-7 score 16, worry about work, health and finances daily; start escitalopram 10 mg and CBT referral.

About 3 percent of US adults have GAD in a given year, and it frequently coexists with depression. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommended anxiety screening for adults under 65 in 2023. Benzodiazepines are generally avoided for long-term use because of dependence risk. In endocrinology GAD refers to glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies.

2. Glutamic acid decarboxylase (autoantibody)

Medical · Endocrinology & Diabetes Abbreviations

Enzyme in pancreatic beta cells and nerve cells; antibodies against its 65 kDa form (GAD65) are the most common islet autoantibodies in type 1 diabetes and LADA. Testing helps distinguish autoimmune diabetes from type 2 in uncertain cases.

Example: GAD antibodies strongly positive, C-peptide low; reclassified as autoimmune diabetes.

Usually written GAD65 or anti-GAD in lab orders. Very high titers also occur in stiff-person syndrome and some autoimmune epilepsies. In psychiatry GAD means generalized anxiety disorder, by far the more familiar meaning, so endocrine notes normally include "antibody" or "GAD65".
