DFU stands for Diabetic foot ulcer, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Open wound on the foot of a person with diabetes, usually from pressure or injury on a numb foot, sometimes with poor circulation. Diabetic foot ulcers precede most nontraumatic lower-limb amputations and require offloading, debridement, infection control and vascular assessment.
Example: DFU right first metatarsal head, probe-to-bone positive; MRI for osteomyelitis.
Usage notes
Classification systems include Wagner and University of Texas grades. A positive probe-to-bone test raises suspicion of osteomyelitis. Total contact casting is a highly effective offloading method. People with a healed ulcer have a high chance of recurrence, so protective footwear and regular foot care continue indefinitely.
