1. Diabetes insipidus

Medical · Endocrinology & Diabetes Abbreviations

Disorder of water balance producing large volumes of dilute urine and intense thirst, caused either by deficient vasopressin release from the pituitary (central) or kidney resistance to it (nephrogenic). It is unrelated to diabetes mellitus despite the shared word.

Example: Polyuria 6 L/day after pituitary surgery, urine osmolality 110: central DI, desmopressin given.

"Insipidus" means tasteless, contrasting with the sweet urine of diabetes mellitus. Lithium is the most common cause of acquired nephrogenic DI. Desmopressin treats central DI, while thiazides and amiloride help nephrogenic forms. In 2022 international endocrine societies proposed renaming central DI to AVP deficiency and nephrogenic DI to AVP resistance.

2. Drill instructor

Military · Military Term Abbreviations

Marine Corps NCO or staff NCO who trains recruits at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island or San Diego, famous for intense discipline and the wide-brimmed campaign cover. Navy recruit division commanders and Air Force training instructors serve similar roles.

Example: The DI made the platoon remake every rack until the corners were perfect.

Drill instructors complete Drill Instructor School before a demanding tour of about three years. The campaign cover is nicknamed the "Smokey" for its resemblance to Smokey Bear's hat. Female Marines have served as drill instructors for decades, training recruits at both depots.

3. Detective Inspector

Writing & Everyday · Title and Honorific Abbreviations · also used in government

British police rank immediately below detective chief inspector, typically supervising a team of detective sergeants and constables. Television dramas such as A Touch of Frost, whose hero was DI Jack Frost, made it widely recognized.

Example: DI Shah asked anyone with dashcam footage from the A40 that evening to contact police.

In England and Wales, an inspector's rank is the same whether uniformed or plainclothes; the D prefix marks officers in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). A uniformed inspector is styled simply Insp. On major cases a DI often acts as deputy to the senior investigating officer.

4. Deionized (water)

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

Water purified by passing it through ion-exchange resins that remove dissolved mineral ions such as calcium, sodium and chloride. DI water is used to prepare reagents, rinse glassware and electronics, and top up batteries and laboratory equipment where mineral residues would interfere.

Example: Rinse the glassware three times with DI water and let it air-dry.

Purity is checked by resistivity, with ultrapure "Type I" water reaching about 18.2 megohm-centimeters at 25 °C. Deionization removes ions but not necessarily bacteria or uncharged organic compounds, so it differs from distilled water, which is boiled and condensed. Labs often combine reverse osmosis, ion exchange and UV treatment.

5. Dependency injection

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations

A technique in which an object receives the services it depends on from outside, typically through its constructor, instead of creating them itself. This makes code easier to test with mock objects and to reconfigure; Spring, Angular and ASP.NET Core provide DI containers.

Example: Inject the mail client through DI so the test can pass in a fake one.

Martin Fowler named the pattern in a 2004 article, preferring it to the vaguer "inversion of control". DI is one way to follow the dependency inversion principle in SOLID. Heavy use of DI frameworks can make it hard to see where objects come from.

6. Direct input

Arts & Entertainment · Music Abbreviations

Box or technique for plugging an instrument such as a bass, keyboard or acoustic guitar directly into a mixing console. A DI box converts the instrument's unbalanced, high-impedance signal into a balanced, mic-level signal that can run long cables without noise.

Example: Run the bass through a DI and mic the amp as well, then blend them.

Also expanded as "direct injection", especially in Britain. Passive DI boxes need no power; active DIs use phantom power or batteries and suit low-output pickups. Stage plots list which instruments need a DI.
