1. Graves' disease

Medical · Endocrinology & Diabetes Abbreviations

Autoimmune disease in which antibodies stimulate the TSH receptor, causing hyperthyroidism, a diffuse goiter and, in some patients, thyroid eye disease and pretibial skin thickening. It is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in the US and is treated with antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine or surgery.

Example: GD with mild orbitopathy; methimazole 20 mg daily, recheck free T4 in 6 weeks.

Named after Irish physician Robert Graves, who described it in 1835; in continental Europe it is often called Basedow's disease. It is far more common in women. Smoking increases the risk and severity of the eye disease. In psychiatry GD stands for gender dysphoria, so the abbreviation is typically spelled out in shared records.

2. Goal difference

Sports · Soccer (Association Football) Abbreviations

Goals scored minus goals conceded, the first tiebreaker for teams level on points in most league tables. A team with 70 scored and 30 conceded has a GD of +40.

Example: The club finished level on points with the champions but trailed on GD.

The Football League replaced goal average, goals scored divided by conceded, with goal difference in 1976-77 because it encourages attacking play. Manchester City won the 2011-12 Premier League title on goal difference after Sergio Aguero's stoppage-time winner.

3. Gender dysphoria

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

DSM-5 diagnosis describing clinically significant distress or impairment associated with a marked incongruence between a person's experienced gender and the sex assigned at birth, lasting at least six months. Care may include psychotherapy, social transition and, for some, medical interventions.

Example: GD in adolescent, persistent for 3 years; multidisciplinary gender clinic assessment.

DSM-5 introduced the term in 2013, replacing "gender identity disorder" to emphasize distress rather than identity itself. ICD-11 instead uses "gender incongruence" and places it in a chapter on sexual health rather than mental disorders. Being transgender is not itself considered a mental disorder. In endocrinology GD means Graves' disease.

4. Gadolinium (Gd)

Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations

Gadolinium (element 64) has seven unpaired electrons, making it strongly paramagnetic; chelated gadolinium compounds are the standard contrast agents for MRI scans. It also absorbs neutrons extremely well, serves in nuclear reactor control, and is ferromagnetic only below about 20 °C, close to room temperature.

Example: Post-contrast images were obtained after intravenous injection of a Gd-based agent.

Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac detected its oxide spectroscopically in 1880, and Lecoq de Boisbaudran isolated it in 1886. It was named, via the mineral gadolinite, after Finnish chemist Johan Gadolin, a pioneer of rare earth research. Traces of gadolinium can remain in the brain and body after repeated MRI contrast doses, a subject of ongoing safety review.

5. General delivery

Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations

Postal service that holds mail at a post office for people without a permanent address, such as travelers or people experiencing homelessness; Canada Post writes it GD, and USPS spells out GENERAL DELIVERY.

Example: Travelers can have letters sent to them by GD at the main post office in town.

USPS generally holds general delivery mail for up to 30 days. GD is also Grenada's ISO country code.

6. Grenada

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

The Spice Isle of the Caribbean, Grenada is known for nutmeg, which appears on its flag. St. George's is the capital, and GRD the alpha-3 code.

Example: The spice exporter's invoices from St. George's list GD as the country.

The 1983 US-led invasion of Grenada followed a coup. The language code gd is Scottish Gaelic, not Grenadian.
