CSII stands for Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Insulin therapy delivered by a pump that infuses rapid-acting insulin under the skin through a small cannula, with a programmable background (basal) rate and user-triggered meal and correction boluses. It is the technical term for insulin pump therapy.
Example: Transition from MDI to CSII; basal 0.8 units/h, carb ratio 1:10, sensitivity 50.
Usage notes
Pump failure or a kinked cannula can cause DKA within hours, because no long-acting insulin is on board. Patch pumps without tubing, such as Omnipod, are a common format. When linked to a CGM with dosing algorithms, CSII becomes automated insulin delivery.
