1. Extracellular matrix

Science & Engineering · Biology Abbreviations

Network of proteins and carbohydrates, such as collagen, elastin, fibronectin and proteoglycans, that cells secrete around themselves. The ECM gives tissues like skin, cartilage, tendon and bone their strength and elasticity and sends chemical and mechanical signals that guide cell behavior.

Example: Tumor cells secrete enzymes that degrade the ECM, allowing them to invade nearby tissue.

Collagen, the main ECM protein, is the most abundant protein in mammals. Matrigel, a commercial ECM extract from mouse tumors, is widely used to grow organoids. Engineers seeding cells onto decellularized ECM "scaffolds" aim to build replacement tissues and organs.

2. Equity capital markets

Business & Finance · Finance Abbreviations

Investment bank team that helps companies raise money by issuing shares, including IPOs, follow-on offerings, block trades and convertible bonds. ECM bankers sit between the corporate client and the bank's equity sales desk, advising on timing, pricing and investor demand.

Example: The ECM desk says the window for tech IPOs is open, with three deals pricing next week.

ECM activity is highly cyclical and tracks stock market sentiment closely. Banks report ECM and DCM underwriting fees separately in their earnings. In electronics, ECM can stand for engine control module or electret condenser microphone.

3. Engine control module

Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations

Manufacturer term, used by General Motors and many others, for the computer that runs the engine's fuel, spark and emissions functions. Service manuals and diagnostic tools refer to replacing or reprogramming the ECM.

Example: The shop says the ECM needs a software update before the misfire code will clear.

ECM and ECU usually mean the same component. In heavy trucks, the ECM also records speed, hard-braking events and fault history, which investigators can download after a crash. When the engine and transmission share one computer, it is often called the PCM instead.
