DOJ stands for United States Department of Justice, a US federal agency abbreviation.

Enforces federal law, prosecutes federal crimes and represents the United States in court. Headed by the Attorney General, it includes the FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals Service and Bureau of Prisons, plus US Attorney's offices in 94 judicial districts.

Example: A DOJ spokesperson declined to say whether the grand jury had returned an indictment.

Usage notes

The office of Attorney General dates to the Judiciary Act of 1789, but the department itself was created by an 1870 law, partly to handle the surge of litigation after the Civil War. Its headquarters is the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building in Washington. AP style prefers "Justice Department"; DOJ is standard in legal writing.
