1. Antimicrobial stewardship program

Medical · Infectious Disease Abbreviations

Coordinated hospital or clinic program, usually led by an infectious disease physician and pharmacist, that improves antibiotic use through audits, feedback, approval requirements, guidelines and education. Goals include better patient outcomes, less resistance and fewer C. difficile infections.

Example: ASP recommendation: narrow piperacillin-tazobactam to ceftriaxone based on culture, plan 7-day course.

The CDC published its Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs in 2014. The Joint Commission introduced a stewardship standard in 2017, and Medicare conditions of participation now require hospitals to have a program. "Days of therapy per 1,000 patient-days" is a common metric. Pronounced as letters.

2. Average selling price

Business & Finance · E-commerce & Retail Abbreviations

Average price at which units of a product or category actually sell, after discounts, calculated as revenue divided by units sold. Electronics and tech makers report it to show pricing trends, such as smartphone ASP.

Example: Strong demand for premium models pushed our ASP up 6% even as unit sales fell.

ASP differs from list price because it reflects promotions, product mix and channel discounts. In computing, ASP can mean Active Server Pages or application service provider.

3. Active Server Pages

Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations

Microsoft's server-side scripting technology, released in 1996, for generating dynamic web pages on its IIS web server, usually with VBScript. Its successor, ASP.NET, is widely used to build enterprise web applications and APIs in C#.

Example: The intranet still runs classic ASP pages with .asp extensions on an old Windows server.

Superseded in 2002 by ASP.NET, part of the .NET Framework; the cross-platform, open-source ASP.NET Core followed in 2016. Developers say "classic ASP" to separate the original from ASP.NET, since they are quite different technologies. In early cloud jargon ASP also meant application service provider.

4. Associate Safety Professional

Education & Academia · Professional Certification Abbreviations

BCSP credential for safety practitioners early in their careers, requiring a bachelor's degree, a year of safety experience and an exam covering hazard recognition, safety management and regulations. Many holders later qualify for the CSP.

Example: He earned the ASP two years into his safety career and plans to sit for the CSP.

Graduates of qualified academic programs can receive the Graduate Safety Practitioner designation, which also serves as a pathway to the CSP. In software, ASP refers to Microsoft's Active Server Pages and application service providers.
