CategoriesTechnology & Computing

SOLID stands for Single responsibility, open-closed, Liskov substitution, interface segregation, dependency inversion, a programming abbreviation.

A mnemonic for five object-oriented design principles: each class has one reason to change, code is open to extension but closed to modification, subtypes can replace their base types, interfaces stay small, and modules depend on abstractions rather than concrete classes.

Example: The interviewer asked her to explain each SOLID principle with an example from her own code.

Usage notes

Robert C. Martin ("Uncle Bob") gathered the principles in a 2000 paper, and Michael Feathers coined the acronym around 2004. The Liskov principle comes from Barbara Liskov's 1987 conference keynote. Critics argue the principles are vague and encourage too many small classes, but they remain a staple of job interviews.
