1. Date of rank
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Date on which a member is considered to have been promoted to the current grade, used to settle seniority among members of the same rank. When two officers hold the same rank, the one with the earlier DOR is senior.
Example: Both captains pinned on the same day, but her earlier DOR makes her senior.
Date of rank can differ from the effective date of promotion for pay purposes. It is shown on records and promotion orders, and frocked members wear a higher rank before their official DOR.
2. Drop on request
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Voluntary withdrawal from a selective training program, such as SEAL training, flight school or Ranger School. In Navy SEAL training, candidates traditionally signal DOR by ringing a brass bell three times.
Example: Half the class had a DOR before the end of Hell Week.
Candidates who DOR usually return to the fleet or their previous specialty, depending on their contract. Instructors are trained to make quitting easy and visible, since the courses aim to identify those who will not quit. The word is used as a verb: "he DOR'd on day three."
3. Definition of Ready (DoR)
Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations
Checklist of conditions a backlog item should meet before a team takes it into a sprint, such as clear acceptance criteria, estimated size and resolved dependencies.
Example: That story fails our DoR because the API spec isn't final.
Unlike the Definition of Done, it is not part of the official Scrum Guide, and some coaches warn that strict versions become bureaucratic gates.
