CategoriesMedical

DCIS stands for Ductal carcinoma in situ, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Noninvasive breast cancer in which abnormal cells are confined to the milk ducts and have not spread into surrounding tissue (stage 0). It is often found as calcifications on screening mammograms and accounts for about a fifth of screen-detected breast cancers.

Example: Screening mammogram calcifications; stereotactic biopsy shows DCIS, intermediate grade, ER positive.

Usage notes

DCIS itself is not life-threatening, but some cases progress to invasive cancer if untreated. Standard treatment is lumpectomy, often with radiation, or mastectomy, sometimes followed by endocrine therapy; trials in the US, UK and Europe are testing active monitoring for low-risk DCIS. Debate about overdiagnosis has made DCIS a central topic in breast screening policy.
