1. Cost per mille
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Price of 1,000 ad impressions, the standard pricing and comparison unit for display, video, social, TV, radio and print advertising. A campaign costing $5,000 that delivers 1 million impressions has a CPM of $5.
Example: Prime-time TV commands a much higher CPM than programmatic banner inventory.
"Mille" is Latin for thousand, so CPM is also called cost per thousand; some European markets write CPT. CPM-based buying suits brand awareness goals, while performance marketers favor CPC or CPA. In project management, CPM means the critical path method, and in real estate a Certified Property Manager.
2. Critical path method
Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations
Scheduling technique that identifies the longest chain of dependent activities in a project, the critical path, which sets the shortest possible project duration. Any delay to a critical activity delays the whole project unless the schedule is changed.
Example: The CPM analysis shows the foundations and steel erection are on the critical path.
Developed in 1957 by Morgan R. Walker of DuPont and James E. Kelley Jr. of Remington Rand. A forward pass calculates early start and early finish dates, and a backward pass calculates late start and late finish; activities with zero float form the critical path. In advertising, CPM means cost per thousand impressions.
3. Certified Professional Midwife
Medical · Healthcare Credential Abbreviations
Midwife credential from the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) for practitioners trained to attend births outside hospitals, at home or in birth centers. Candidates complete approved education or apprenticeship and pass the NARM exam.
Example: Home birth attended by CPM; newborn exam and screening completed at 24 hours.
Legal status and licensure for CPMs vary widely between states. CPM training focuses on low-risk pregnancy and out-of-hospital care. It differs from CNM and CM credentials, which require graduate education. In rehabilitation CPM means continuous passive motion.
4. Continuous passive motion
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Motorized device that slowly bends and straightens a joint, usually the knee, through a set range without the patient's muscle effort, used after some joint surgeries.
Example: CPM 0 to 70 degrees, increase 5 to 10 degrees daily as tolerated, 4 hrs/day.
Once routine after knee replacement, CPM is now used selectively because studies showed little long-term benefit over exercise. It remains common after some cartilage, ligament and fracture procedures. In midwifery CPM means Certified Professional Midwife.
5. Certified Property Manager
Education & Academia · Professional Certification Abbreviations · also used in business
Designation from the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) for managers of residential, commercial and mixed-use properties, requiring coursework, experience managing a portfolio and a capstone assessment.
Example: The apartment company promoted a CPM to oversee its 4,000-unit portfolio.
IREM was founded in 1933 and is affiliated with the National Association of REALTORS. In project management and engineering, CPM means critical path method, an unrelated meaning.
