1. Cost per click
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Price an advertiser pays for each click on an ad, and the metric that reports the average: total ad spend divided by the number of clicks. In auction-based platforms, the actual CPC is set by the bids of competing advertisers and the ad's quality.
Example: Legal and insurance keywords can run above $50 CPC, while most retail terms cost under a dollar.
In Google Ads, the actual CPC is often lower than the advertiser's maximum bid, because the winner typically pays just enough to beat the next advertiser's ad rank. High CPCs are tolerable when conversion rates and customer value are high, so CPC is judged alongside CPA and ROAS. Do not confuse it with CPM, which is priced per thousand impressions.
2. Communist Party of China
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
Official English name, used by Chinese government and state media, for the ruling party of the People's Republic of China, the same organization widely called the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Western media.
Example: The CPC Central Committee issued guidelines on rural revitalization.
The choice between CPC and CCP is a matter of style: the party's own documents and Xinhua use CPC, mirroring the Chinese word order. The same initials also refer to the Conservative Party of Canada and to the US Congressional Progressive Caucus, so context is essential.
3. Congressional Progressive Caucus
Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations
Caucus of progressive Democrats in Congress that advocates policies such as expanded health coverage, a higher minimum wage and stronger labor protections. It is one of the largest ideological groups within the House Democratic Caucus.
Example: The CPC demanded that the climate provisions remain in the final package.
Founded in 1991 by Bernie Sanders, then a House member, together with several Democrats. Its leaders negotiate as a bloc on major bills, as during the 2021 talks over the infrastructure law and the Build Back Better package. CPC also refers to the Conservative Party of Canada and the Communist Party of China, depending on context.
4. Conservative Party of Canada
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
Federal centre-right political party in Canada, formed in 2003 by the merger of the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservative Party. It governed from 2006 to 2015 under Stephen Harper and forms the Official Opposition.
Example: The CPC leader promised to cut the federal sales tax on new homes.
Members and supporters are called Conservatives or Tories, and the party's color is blue. The merger reunited the right after the Reform Party's rise in the 1990s split the vote. CPC is also used for the Communist Party of China and, in the US, the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
