1. Certified Public Accountant
Education & Academia · Professional Certification Abbreviations
US accounting license granted by state boards of accountancy to candidates who meet education and experience requirements and pass the four-part Uniform CPA Examination. Only CPAs may sign audit opinions on financial statements, and many controllers, tax advisers and finance executives hold the license.
Example: Maria Chen, CPA, leads the firm's audit practice for nonprofit clients.
The exam, developed by the AICPA and administered with NASBA, was restructured in 2024 into three core sections (AUD, FAR, REG) plus one discipline section of the candidate's choice, each requiring a score of 75. Most states historically required 150 credit hours of education, but many now also accept a bachelor's degree plus two years of experience. Licenses require ongoing continuing professional education (CPE).
2. Cost per acquisition
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Average amount spent on advertising or marketing to win one conversion, such as a sale, sign-up or app subscription: total campaign cost divided by the number of conversions. Advertisers set target CPAs that keep customer acquisition profitable.
Example: We can afford a $60 CPA because the average first order is $140 with a 55% margin.
Also read as "cost per action," especially in affiliate marketing, where it names a pricing model in which the advertiser pays only when a defined action occurs. Google Ads offers automated "target CPA" bidding. Accountants know the same letters as Certified Public Accountant, which is unrelated.
3. Chartered Professional Accountant
Education & Academia · Professional Certification Abbreviations
Unified Canadian accounting designation created between 2012 and 2014 by merging the CA, CMA and CGA designations, governed by CPA Canada and provincial bodies. Candidates complete the CPA Professional Education Program, the Common Final Examination and about 30 months of relevant experience.
Example: She qualified as a CPA in Ontario after passing the CFE and completing her practical experience.
Holders who earned a legacy designation may still show it, as in "CPA, CA". The Canadian CPA is distinct from the US Certified Public Accountant, although mutual recognition agreements let qualified members practice across the border more easily. Quebec's order also uses the French title CPA.
4. Certified Practising Accountant
Education & Academia · Professional Certification Abbreviations
Designation awarded by CPA Australia, one of Australia's main professional accounting bodies, after a degree, the CPA Program exams and three years of mentored experience. Members can also earn the senior FCPA (Fellow) status.
Example: The job advertisement asks for a CPA or CA qualification and five years' experience in financial reporting.
CPA Australia, founded in 1886 in an earlier form, competes with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ). The Australian spelling "practising" is part of the official title. Holders must complete continuing professional development each year to keep the designation.
5. Closest point of approach
Transportation & Travel · Maritime Abbreviations
Smallest distance at which two vessels will pass each other if both keep their current course and speed, calculated by radar or AIS. Watchkeepers use CPA to judge collision risk.
Example: With a CPA of 0.3 miles and closing, the captain ordered a turn to starboard.
Ship operators often set minimum CPA limits, such as 1 or 2 nautical miles in open water. CPA is paired with TCPA, the time until that point is reached. In accounting, CPA means certified public accountant.
6. Collaborative practice agreement
Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations
Formal written agreement between a pharmacist and one or more prescribers defining which patients, conditions and drug therapy decisions the pharmacist may manage. It is the legal tool that makes collaborative drug therapy management possible.
Example: Per CPA, the pharmacist may titrate basal insulin and order A1c and BMP.
CPAs specify protocols, documentation, communication and review, and must comply with state pharmacy and medical practice laws. They are widely used in ambulatory care clinics and some community pharmacies, for example for tobacco cessation and hormonal contraception. In business CPA means certified public accountant.
