1. Command-line interface

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations

A text-based way of operating software by typing commands, options and arguments at a prompt, such as git commit or npm install. Developer tools, cloud services and servers are often driven through CLIs because commands can be scripted and repeated exactly.

Example: The cloud CLI creates the whole environment with three commands instead of forty clicks.

Command lines date from the teletype terminals of the 1960s and the Unix shell of the 1970s, long before graphical interfaces. Many products ship an official CLI, such as the AWS CLI, GitHub's gh and the Angular CLI, which scaffolds new projects. Conventions include single-dash short flags (-v) and double-dash long options (--verbose). In telephony CLI means calling line identification, a caller-ID term.

2. Critical limb ischemia

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Most severe stage of peripheral artery disease, with pain at rest, ulcers that will not heal or gangrene, lasting more than two weeks. Without revascularization by angioplasty, stenting or bypass, it carries a high risk of major amputation.

Example: Rest pain in the right foot at night and a toe ulcer: CLI, angiogram with possible intervention scheduled.

Newer guidelines prefer chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), reflecting that limb-loss risk also depends on wound and infection severity, graded with the WIfI system (wound, ischemia, foot infection). Acute limb ischemia is a separate emergency caused by sudden embolism or thrombosis and recognized by the "6 Ps": pain, pallor, pulselessness, paresthesia, paralysis and poikilothermia.

3. Calling line identification

Technology & Computing · Telecom Abbreviations

British and European term for caller ID, the transmission of the caller's phone number to the person being called. Callers can withhold it, and in the UK dialing 141 before a number does so for one call.

Example: The bank never calls with a withheld CLI, so treat private-number calls with suspicion.

CLIP (presentation) and CLIR (restriction) are the network services that show or hide the number. Spoofed CLI, in which scammers fake a trusted number, prompted rules such as the US STIR/SHAKEN framework and UK requirements to block calls with invalid numbers. In computing, CLI means command-line interface.
