CLIP stands for Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
A model from OpenAI that learns a shared space for images and text by training on hundreds of millions of image-caption pairs, so it can match pictures to descriptions it was never explicitly trained on. It guides many image generators and search systems.
Example: Image search uses CLIP embeddings, so typing "red sneakers on grass" finds matching photos without tags.
Usage notes
Released in January 2021 and trained on 400 million image-text pairs collected from the internet. Its text encoder steered early text-to-image systems, including the first versions of Stable Diffusion. CLIP enabled "zero-shot" classification, recognizing categories from their names alone. Open reproductions include OpenCLIP.
