CategoriesTechnology & Computing

CI/CD stands for Continuous integration and continuous delivery (or deployment), a programming abbreviation.

The combined practice of automatically building and testing every code change (CI) and then automatically preparing or releasing it to production (CD). A CI/CD pipeline turns a merged pull request into a tested, deployable build without manual steps.

Example: The CI/CD pipeline runs unit tests, builds the Docker image and deploys to staging on every merge.

Usage notes

Common tools include GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, CircleCI and Azure Pipelines, with pipelines usually defined in YAML files kept in the repository. The "CD" half is ambiguous: some teams mean continuous delivery, where releases still need human approval, and others mean continuous deployment, where every passing change ships automatically. Pronounced "C-I-C-D".
