chmod stands for Change mode, a programming abbreviation.
The Unix command that sets file permissions, controlling who can read, write or execute a file. Permissions can be given as letters, such as u+x, or as octal numbers, such as 755.
Example: Run chmod +x deploy.sh so the script can be executed.
Usage notes
Permissions apply to three classes: the owning user, the group and everyone else. In octal notation 4 means read, 2 write and 1 execute, so 644 gives the owner read-write access and others read-only. Setting 777, which grants everyone full access, is a common but risky shortcut. Related commands chown and chgrp change ownership.
