1. Corporation for Public Broadcasting
Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations
Private nonprofit corporation created by Congress to channel federal funding to public radio and television stations, NPR and PBS. In July 2025 Congress rescinded its previously appropriated funds, and CPB announced in August 2025 that it would wind down its operations.
Example: The station lost about 15 percent of its budget when CPB grants ended.
Lyndon Johnson signed the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, which created it. CPB funded stations rather than producing programs itself, and most of its money went directly to local stations. Rural stations, which relied more heavily on federal support, were considered most at risk from the loss of funding.
2. Cardiopulmonary bypass
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Technique in which a heart-lung machine temporarily takes over pumping and oxygenating the blood during heart surgery, allowing the surgeon to stop the heart and operate on a still, bloodless field. It is run by a perfusionist and requires full anticoagulation with heparin.
Example: Total CPB time 112 minutes, cross-clamp time 78 minutes; weaned without inotropes.
John Gibbon performed the first successful open-heart operation using a heart-lung machine in 1953, closing an atrial septal defect. Cardioplegia solution stops the heart and protects the muscle while the aorta is clamped. Potential complications include bleeding, inflammation, stroke and "pump head," a nickname for postoperative cognitive changes.
