YAML stands for YAML Ain't Markup Language, a programming abbreviation.
A human-friendly data format that uses indentation instead of brackets, widely used for configuration in Kubernetes, Docker Compose, GitHub Actions, Ansible and many CI/CD systems. Any JSON document is also valid YAML 1.2.
Example: The deploy failed because of a two-space indentation error in the YAML file.
Usage notes
First proposed in 2001 by Clark Evans, Ingy döt Net and Oren Ben-Kiki as "Yet Another Markup Language", then given its recursive expansion to stress that it describes data, not documents. Its flexibility has pitfalls: under YAML 1.1 rules an unquoted NO, the country code for Norway, is read as false, the so-called Norway problem. Files use .yaml or .yml.
