1. Barrett's esophagus

Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations

Condition in which the normal squamous lining of the lower esophagus is replaced by intestinal-type columnar cells, usually after years of reflux. It is the main precursor of esophageal adenocarcinoma, so patients undergo surveillance endoscopy with biopsies, and dysplasia is treated with endoscopic ablation or resection.

Example: Short-segment BE, Prague C1M3, no dysplasia; surveillance EGD in five years.

Named after British surgeon Norman Barrett, who described it in 1950. The Prague classification records the circumferential (C) and maximal (M) extent in centimeters. Annual cancer risk without dysplasia is low, roughly 0.2–0.5 percent. In radiology BE means barium enema, so the type of report usually settles which is meant.

2. Belgium

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Belgium's code heads the .be domain and Belgian IBANs, which at 16 characters are among Europe's shortest. Brussels, the capital, hosts the main EU institutions and NATO headquarters; alpha-3 is BEL.

Example: Shipping to BE takes two days from our warehouse in the Netherlands.

The .be domain is used for English word plays such as youtu.be. Belgium has three official languages, Dutch, French and German, and its vehicle sign is B. The language code be means Belarusian, not Belgian.

3. Barium enema

Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations

X-ray examination of the colon and rectum after barium is introduced through the rectum, often with air for a double-contrast study. Once a mainstay for detecting polyps and cancer, it is now used mainly when colonoscopy and CT colonography are unavailable or to define anatomy.

Example: Incomplete colonoscopy due to tortuous sigmoid; double-contrast BE to complete evaluation.

CT colonography and colonoscopy are more sensitive for polyps, so BE has largely disappeared from screening guidelines. Water-soluble contrast enemas are still used to look for anastomotic leaks and, in infants, to diagnose and treat meconium ileus or intussusception. In other GI reports BE refers to Barrett's esophagus.

4. Base excess

Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations

Blood gas value expressing how much acid or base would be needed to return blood to pH 7.40 at a PCO2 of 40 mmHg and body temperature, isolating the metabolic part of an acid-base disturbance. Normal is about -2 to +2 mEq/L; a negative value (base deficit) signals metabolic acidosis.

Example: Arrival ABG shows BE -9, suggesting significant hemorrhagic shock.

The concept was developed by Danish physician Ole Siggaard-Andersen around 1960. Trauma teams use base deficit to grade shock severity and track resuscitation. In gastroenterology and radiology notes, BE means barium enema or Barrett esophagus, so a negative number next to it is the clue that a blood gas is meant.

5. Beryllium (Be)

Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations

Light, stiff and transparent to X-rays, beryllium (element 4, an alkaline earth metal) is used for X-ray tube windows, aerospace parts and the gold-coated mirror segments of the James Webb Space Telescope. Inhaling its dust can cause chronic beryllium disease, so machining is tightly controlled.

Example: The detector's entrance window is a thin Be foil that lets low-energy X-rays through.

Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin identified a new oxide in beryl and emerald in 1798; the metal was isolated in 1828 independently by Friedrich Wöhler and Antoine Bussy. Because its salts taste sweet, it was long called glucinium (symbol Gl) in France. The name comes from the mineral beryl, via Greek beryllos.

6. Bachelor of Engineering

Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations

Engineering degree title used in India, Pakistan, New Zealand and at a few American schools such as Dartmouth, where students add a fifth year after the AB to earn the accredited BE. In India the BE is a four-year degree equivalent to the BTech and is awarded mostly by older universities.

Example: He completed a BE in mechanical engineering at Anna University before moving to Germany for a master's.

Written B.E. in Indian usage. Whether an Indian university awards a BE or a BTech is a matter of tradition rather than content, and employers treat them as equivalent. In Australia many universities now print BEng, but older graduates may hold a BE.

7. Bioequivalence

Medical · Pharmacology Abbreviations

Absence of a significant difference in the rate and extent of absorption between two products containing the same drug, such as a generic and its brand reference. Demonstrating BE is the core requirement for generic drug approval.

Example: BE study: 36 healthy volunteers, crossover design, fasting and fed conditions.

The FDA standard requires the 90% confidence intervals of the AUC and Cmax ratios to fall within 80 to 125 percent, which in practice means average exposure differences are usually only a few percent. Some narrow therapeutic index drugs, such as warfarin and levothyroxine, have tighter product-specific limits.
