IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number, a banking abbreviation.
Standardized account number of up to 34 characters that identifies a bank account for international and domestic transfers in Europe and many other countries. It begins with a two-letter country code and two check digits, followed by a national bank code and account number.
Example: Please send the deposit to the IBAN on the invoice, which starts with DE and runs to 22 characters.
Usage notes
Defined by ISO 13616, IBANs are mandatory for euro transfers within SEPA and are used in roughly 80 countries. The check digits catch most typing errors before a payment is sent. The United States, Canada and Australia do not use IBANs; payments to those countries need routing or BSB codes and account numbers instead.
