CBG stands for Capillary blood glucose, a nursing abbreviation.
Glucose level measured in capillary blood, usually from a fingerstick or a heel stick in newborns, using a point-of-care meter. Nurses record CBGs before meals and at bedtime, or hourly during insulin infusions.
Example: CBG 54 mg/dL, pt diaphoretic; 15 g oral glucose given, recheck in 15 minutes.
Usage notes
The "rule of 15", giving 15 g of fast carbohydrate and rechecking after 15 minutes, is the standard first response to glucose below 70 mg/dL in a conscious patient. Neonatal units use heel-stick CBGs to screen at-risk newborns. In respiratory care CBG can also mean capillary blood gas, a sample used to estimate pH in infants.
