AMG stands for Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach, an automotive abbreviation.

Performance division of Mercedes-Benz that builds high-powered versions of Mercedes models, badged AMG. The initials come from founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher and Großaspach, Aufrecht's birthplace.

Example: The AMG C63 engine plate is signed by the technician who built it.

Usage notes

AMG was founded in 1967 as an independent engineering firm that tuned Mercedes engines for racing. Daimler acquired a majority stake in 1999 and full ownership in 2005. AMG's "one man, one engine" philosophy means each of its hand-built engines carries the builder's signature. The town's name is spelled with the German sharp s, sometimes rendered Grossaspach in English.
