CAN-SPAM stands for Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act, a US law abbreviation.

Sets rules for commercial email: senders may not use misleading headers or subject lines, must identify messages as ads, include a valid postal address and honor opt-out requests within 10 business days. The FTC enforces it, with large civil penalties per violating email.

Example: Every newsletter footer includes an unsubscribe link and mailing address to satisfy CAN-SPAM.

Usage notes

Signed in December 2003 and effective January 1, 2004, it preempted stricter state anti-spam laws. Unlike rules in the EU and Canada, it does not require recipients to opt in before receiving marketing email. Text messages are covered by separate rules under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
