BRL stands for Brazilian real, a currency abbreviation.

Brazil's currency since 1994, issued by the Central Bank of Brazil, divided into 100 centavos and written R$. The plural is reais.

Example: The Rio hotel charges BRL 650 per night during Carnival week.

Usage notes

The real was launched under the Plano Real in July 1994 to end hyperinflation, after a string of failed currencies including the cruzeiro and cruzado. Pix, the instant-payment system the central bank launched in 2020, quickly became the country's most used payment method.
