ARFID stands for Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, a mental health & psychiatry abbreviation.
Eating disorder in which a person avoids or restricts food because of sensory sensitivities, fear of choking or vomiting, or low interest in eating, not because of concerns about weight or body shape. It can cause weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, dependence on supplements or major social impairment.
Example: ARFID after choking episode, eats 8 foods, weight-for-age dropping; refer to feeding team.
Usage notes
Pronounced "AR-fid". DSM-5 introduced ARFID in 2013, replacing the narrower feeding disorder of infancy or early childhood, and it can be diagnosed at any age. It commonly coexists with autism, ADHD and anxiety disorders. Treatment involves gradual exposure to new foods, CBT and nutrition support.
