1. Antiretroviral therapy

Medical · Infectious Disease Abbreviations

Combination of medicines from at least two drug classes that suppresses HIV replication, restores immune function and prevents transmission. Current guidelines recommend starting ART for everyone with HIV as soon as possible after diagnosis, regardless of CD4 count.

Example: Same-day ART started with bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide; viral load in 4 weeks.

Modern regimens are often one pill once a day, and long-acting injectable cabotegravir plus rilpivirine, given every one or two months, became available in 2021. The START trial (2015) showed that immediate treatment benefits people even with high CD4 counts. In fertility medicine ART means assisted reproductive technology, a completely different field.

2. Assisted reproductive technology

Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations

Fertility treatments in which eggs or embryos are handled outside the body, including IVF, ICSI, frozen embryo transfer and egg donation. In US reporting, IUI and ovulation drugs alone are not counted as ART.

Example: ART cycle data reported to CDC and SART per federal requirement.

The Fertility Clinic Success Rate and Certification Act of 1992 requires US clinics to report ART outcomes to the CDC. The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) publishes clinic-level data. In HIV care ART means antiretroviral therapy, a completely different meaning.

3. Argentina Time

Units & Measurements · Time Zone Abbreviations

Argentina's single time zone, UTC−3, used all year in Buenos Aires and across the country. Most of Argentina lies geographically in the UTC−4 or UTC−5 bands, so summer sunsets come very late by the clock.

Example: The match at La Bombonera kicks off at 21:30 ART.

Argentina last observed daylight saving in the 2008-2009 summer. The late solar time contributes to famously late dinner hours in Buenos Aires, where restaurants fill after 9 p.m.

4. Article (art.)

Law & Legal · Legal Citation Abbreviations · also used in general use

Abbreviation for an article of a constitution, treaty or uniform code in citations, as in "U.S. Const. art. III, § 2" or "U.C.C. art. 2". Articles are the major divisions of such documents; sections and clauses are subdivisions within them.

Example: Federal judicial power is defined in U.S. Const. art. III, § 2, cl. 1.

The Bluebook uses lowercase "art." inside citations but capitalizes "Article" in text when referring to a specific article of the US Constitution ("Article III standing"). Constitutional articles are numbered with Roman numerals, while UCC articles use Arabic numerals. The plural is "arts."

5. Agile release train

Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations

Long-lived team of agile teams, often 50 to 125 people, that plans, commits and delivers together on a shared cadence under the Scaled Agile Framework.

Example: Our ART has eight teams working on the claims platform.

Each ART is coordinated by a release train engineer and aligned to a value stream.
