AOV stands for Average order value, an e-commerce & retail abbreviation.
Average amount a customer spends per order, calculated as total revenue divided by number of orders over a period. Online stores raise it with bundles, upsells, volume discounts and free-shipping thresholds.
Example: Setting free shipping at $75 lifted our AOV from $58 to $71.
Usage notes
AOV is one of the three levers of e-commerce revenue, along with traffic and conversion rate. Retailers usually set free-shipping minimums slightly above current AOV to nudge shoppers to add items. Averages can be distorted by a few very large orders, so some teams also track median order value. The in-store equivalent is usually called average transaction value (ATV).
