3DS stands for 3-D Secure, an e-commerce & retail abbreviation.
Card authentication protocol that adds a verification step to online payments, such as approving in a banking app or entering a one-time code, shifting liability for fraud from the merchant to the card issuer when used.
Example: The payment failed because I didn't approve the 3DS prompt in my bank app.
Usage notes
Originally developed by Visa as Verified by Visa, with Mastercard's version later becoming Identity Check. The improved 3DS2 protocol supports frictionless approval for low-risk transactions. Europe's Strong Customer Authentication rules under PSD2 made 3DS effectively mandatory for most online card payments from 2021, and in the UK from 2022.
