Bash stands for Bourne Again Shell, a programming abbreviation.

The command-line shell and scripting language that is the default on most Linux distributions, used to run commands, automate tasks and write shell scripts. macOS used it as the default shell until 2019.

Example: Save the commands in deploy.sh and run it with bash deploy.sh.

Usage notes

Written by Brian Fox for the GNU Project and released in 1989 as a free replacement for Stephen Bourne's sh; the name puns on "born again". macOS switched its default to zsh in Catalina (2019), partly because newer Bash versions use the GPLv3 license. The 2014 Shellshock vulnerability affected Bash on millions of servers.
