1. Scalable Vector Graphics

Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations

XML-based vector image format that describes shapes, paths and text mathematically, so images stay perfectly sharp at any size. It is widely used for logos, icons, charts and illustrations on websites.

Example: Use the SVG version of the logo so it stays crisp on high-resolution screens.

The W3C published SVG 1.0 as a Recommendation in 2001, and all modern browsers display it natively. Because SVG files are text, they can be edited in code, styled with CSS and compressed well. They can also contain scripts, so websites that accept SVG uploads must sanitize them to prevent attacks. Photographs are poorly suited to vector formats.

2. Saphenous vein graft

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Segment of the great saphenous vein, harvested from the leg, that is sewn from the aorta to a coronary artery beyond a blockage during bypass surgery. It is the most commonly used bypass conduit after the internal mammary artery.

Example: Chest pain 12 years after CABG; SVG to RCA has a 90% stenosis, treated with a stent and embolic protection.

Vein grafts are prone to failure: a meaningful share close within the first year, and many develop atherosclerosis within a decade, unlike arterial grafts. Endoscopic harvesting through small incisions has largely replaced long leg incisions. Stenting old vein grafts risks sending debris downstream, so protection devices may be used. In computing SVG means scalable vector graphics.
