WARNO stands for Warning order, a military term abbreviation.
Preliminary notice of an upcoming order or action, issued so subordinate units can begin preparing, planning and moving before the full operation order arrives. It typically gives the expected mission, timeline and any early movement.
Example: The WARNO told us to be ready to move by first light and to draw extra water.
Usage notes
Pronounced "WAR-no." Issuing a WARNO early supports parallel planning, letting each echelon use time efficiently. Joint doctrine also writes WARNORD. Army leaders are taught to use no more than one third of available time for their own planning, leaving two thirds for subordinates.
