VNG stands for Videonystagmography, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Balance test in which infrared video goggles record eye movements while the patient follows targets, changes position and has warm and cool air or water placed in each ear canal. It assesses the function of each inner ear's balance system.
Example: VNG: 40 percent right unilateral weakness on calorics, consistent with peripheral vestibulopathy.
Usage notes
VNG replaced electronystagmography (ENG), which recorded eye movements with skin electrodes. Caloric testing compares the left and right horizontal canals. Patients usually avoid sedatives and some other medications for a few days beforehand. Pronounced as letters.
