BPPV stands for Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
The most common cause of vertigo, in which displaced crystals (otoconia) drift into a semicircular canal of the inner ear, causing brief spinning episodes, usually under a minute, triggered by head movements such as rolling over in bed or looking up.
Example: Right posterior canal BPPV, positive Dix-Hallpike; Epley maneuver performed, symptoms resolved.
Usage notes
The Dix-Hallpike test diagnoses the most common posterior canal form, and canalith repositioning such as the Epley maneuver cures most cases in one or two sessions. Guidelines advise against routine imaging and vestibular suppressant drugs. "Benign" refers to its harmless nature, although falls are a risk in older adults. Recurrence is common.
