1. England

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

FIFA code for England, which competes separately from the rest of the United Kingdom in football, rugby and cricket. England won the 1966 World Cup at Wembley.

Example: ENG and SCO meet in the oldest international fixture in football.

England has no ISO country code of its own; ISO 3166-2 uses GB-ENG for subdivisions. At the Olympics English athletes compete for Great Britain (GBR). ENG also abbreviates English and engineering.

2. Empty-net goal

Sports · Ice Hockey Abbreviations

Goal scored into a net left unguarded because the opposing team pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker, usually in the final minutes while trailing.

Example: An ENG with 34 seconds left sealed the 4-2 win.

Coaches now pull goalies earlier, sometimes with three or four minutes left, because analytics show the risk is worth it when trailing. Empty-net goals count fully in goal totals but are excluded from some analytics. Also written EN.
