AREDS stands for Age-Related Eye Disease Study, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Large US National Eye Institute trial, with results published in 2001, showing that a specific high-dose vitamin and mineral supplement reduced the risk of progression to advanced macular degeneration by about 25 percent in people with intermediate or one-sided advanced disease.
Example: Intermediate AMD OU; recommend AREDS2 formula twice daily.
Usage notes
The follow-up AREDS2 trial (2013) replaced beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin, partly because beta-carotene raised lung cancer risk in smokers. The supplements do not prevent AMD in people without significant disease and do not restore lost vision. "AREDS formula" appears on many over-the-counter vitamin labels.
