CategoriesMedical

BCVA stands for Best-corrected visual acuity, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.

Sharpest vision an eye can achieve with the best glasses or contact lens correction, measured after refraction. It reflects the health of the eye itself, rather than simple need for glasses, and is the main outcome in retina and cataract studies.

Example: BCVA OD 20/80 from 20/40 last visit; OCT shows new subretinal fluid.

Usage notes

Clinical trials usually measure BCVA in letters on ETDRS charts, where a gain or loss of 15 letters equals three lines. A pinhole occluder gives a quick estimate of correctable vision in clinic. Legal blindness and driving standards are based on best-corrected, not uncorrected, vision.
