Qualitative test detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine, positive from about the time of a missed period. Hospitals routinely perform a UPT on people of reproductive potential before surgery, imaging with ionizing radiation and starting medications that could harm a pregnancy.
Example: UPT negative; cleared for CT abdomen/pelvis with contrast.
Most urine tests detect hCG at roughly 20 to 25 mIU/mL; first-morning urine is the most concentrated and least likely to give a false negative. Very dilute urine or testing too early can produce a negative despite pregnancy, and extremely high hCG, as in molar pregnancy, can paradoxically give a false negative (hook effect). A serum hCG is drawn when the answer must be definitive or quantified.
