UIT stands for Unit investment trust, a stock market & investing abbreviation.
US investment company that buys a fixed portfolio of securities and holds it, largely unmanaged, until a set termination date, selling redeemable units to investors. UITs are often used for bond ladders and themed equity portfolios.
Example: The 15-month dividend UIT terminates in March, when investors can roll into the next series.
Usage notes
UITs are one of three types of investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940, along with management companies such as mutual funds and face-amount certificate companies. Some early ETFs, including SPY, are legally structured as UITs, which prevents them from lending securities or reinvesting dividends.
