American financial services company best known for its charge and credit cards, including the Green, Gold and Platinum cards, and for travel services. Headquartered in New York City; the short form is usually written Amex.

Founded in 1850 in Albany, New York, as an express freight business by Henry Wells, William Fargo and John Butterfield, who also founded Wells Fargo. It introduced the traveler's cheque in 1891 and its first charge card in 1958. Its NYSE ticker is AXP.

Former US stock exchange in New York, once the country's third largest, known for listing smaller companies and for launching the first US exchange-traded fund in 1993. NYSE Euronext acquired it in 2008, and it now operates as NYSE American.
Example: Older charts still label the small-cap miner an AMEX stock, though the exchange is now NYSE American.
The exchange began as the New York Curb Market, where brokers traded outdoors on the street, and adopted the American Stock Exchange name in 1953. After the 2008 takeover it was renamed NYSE Amex, then NYSE MKT and, in 2017, NYSE American. In everyday use, AMEX usually means the American Express card company.
