13F stands for Form 13F, a stock market & investing abbreviation.

Quarterly SEC report that institutional investment managers with at least $100 million in qualifying US securities must file within 45 days of each quarter-end, listing their long positions. Investors use 13F filings to track what hedge funds and famous investors are buying and selling.

Example: According to its latest 13F, the hedge fund doubled its stake in the cloud software company last quarter.

Usage notes

Because 13F data is up to 45 days old and omits short positions and most non-equity holdings, it gives only a partial, delayed picture. The requirement comes from Section 13(f) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, added in 1975. Managers can request confidential treatment for positions they are still building.
