TTN stands for Transient tachypnea of the newborn, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Mild, temporary breathing difficulty in the first hours after birth caused by slow clearance of fetal lung fluid, producing rapid breathing that usually resolves within 24–72 hours. It is common after cesarean delivery without labor and in late preterm infants.
Example: TTN after scheduled repeat cesarean; RR 76, chest X-ray with fluid in fissures; supplemental oxygen.
Usage notes
Sometimes called "wet lung". Labor helps clear lung fluid, explaining the higher rate after elective cesarean. Supportive care with oxygen or brief CPAP is usually all that is needed. It must be distinguished from respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia and congenital heart disease.
