CCHD stands for Critical congenital heart disease, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.

Heart defects that require surgery or catheter intervention in the first year of life, such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome and transposition of the great arteries. Newborns are screened with pulse oximetry on the right hand and a foot after 24 hours of age.

Example: CCHD screen passed: right hand 98, foot 97 percent.

Usage notes

Pulse oximetry screening was added to the US Recommended Uniform Screening Panel in 2011. Under the AAP's updated algorithm, a baby passes with 95 percent or higher in the right hand or foot and a difference of 3 points or less. Failed screens prompt an echocardiogram.
